Newcastle West undergoes high-rise transformation

Newcastle West is undergoing a significant transformation as high-rise development increases due to relaxed zoning limits. The surge in applications is particularly notable in the areas between Union and Tudor streets, as well as in Wickham.

Developer GWH has commenced work on the first two stages of the Cambridge Quarter development. This project includes two residential buildings, each approximately 25 floors high, located between Denison and Hunter streets. These structures will join existing 30-story developments, such as the Store and Dairy Farmers projects. GWH expects to complete this initial pair of buildings by the first quarter of 2028.

The shift toward taller structures follows a fast-track housing process introduced by the NSW Labor state government in 2023 and 2024, which allowed developers to propose projects that exceed previous zoning restrictions.
