Newcleo leads consortium for French floating nuclear project

A consortium led by the Paris-based company Newcleo has been selected for the ‘n-Floating’ project, an initiative aimed at decarbonizing the French maritime sector. Managed by the investment bank Bpifrance, the project has been awarded nearly €1 million in funding to conduct conceptual studies regarding the technical feasibility of floating nuclear power.

The proposed solution involves a non-self-propelled floating unit housing multiple Newcleo-developed LFR-AS-200 reactors, each providing an electrical output of 200 MW. The consortium includes Newcleo, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, and ABMI Groupe.

The 18-month study phase will focus on developing a robust conceptual design to assess naval architecture, nuclear interfaces, and operational scenarios. The goal is to create a standardized, competitive solution for low-carbon energy generation to support ports, industrial hubs, coastal areas, desalination, and the production of low-carbon fuels.
