Newfoundland and Labrador heating cost debate amid missed regional energy deal

NDP MHA Sheilagh O’Leary warned that the province’s upcoming winter could bring unaffordable heating bills, urging the Progressive Conservative government to remove the HST on heating fuels and to take stronger action beyond a $45 million credit approved for a July rate increase. She noted that many residents are already living paycheck‑to‑paycheck and that current measures would leave bills roughly unchanged from last year.

Liberal opposition leader John Hogan said Newfoundland and Labrador risked missing a chance to lower electricity prices after the three Maritime provinces signed a memorandum of understanding on a regional energy partnership. Premier Tony Wakeham replied that the province is busy negotiating a separate hydro deal with Quebec on the Upper Churchill project and therefore could not commit to the MOU. Hogan called the Premier’s focus on transmission projects a “red flag” for affordability.
