Newfoundland man charged after hit‑and‑run kills six‑year‑old in St. John’s

A 32‑year‑old man, Tyler Day, has been charged in Newfoundland with impaired driving causing death, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation causing death and operating a vehicle over the legal limit causing death. The charges stem from a July 23 incident in St. John’s where Day’s vehicle struck six‑year‑old Zafeer Munir at the intersection of Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street. Munir, who had recently moved from Bangladesh with his family, died in hospital days later.

Police say a member of the public followed Day after the collision, leading to his arrest. Day, who has a prior theft conviction and is also facing unrelated fraud and theft charges, appeared in provincial court for a bail hearing and is scheduled for a one‑day trial on other matters. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed the charges and the investigation.
