Newfoundland weather warning: Intense wind storm expected Saturday
An intense low-pressure system is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to Newfoundland this weekend. Environment Canada has issued warnings for several areas, including St. John’s, the northern Avalon, the northeast coast, and Clarenville.
Meteorologist Ian Hubbard reports that northwesterly winds of approximately 90 km/h will affect much of the island on Saturday, with gusts potentially reaching 100-110 km/h along the northeast and east coasts. The risk of damage from broken branches is high because trees are still full of leaves. Residents are advised to secure loose items, such as lawn furniture and hanging baskets, to prepare for potential power outages.
In addition to high winds, the Great Northern Peninsula's east coast may see up to 50 millimetres of rainfall. The weather system is expected to move through the region and subside by Sunday morning.
