Newmont reports US$ 634 million economic contribution to Suriname in 2025

Newmont reported that its Merian mine contributed approximately US$ 634 million to the Surinamese economy in 2025, representing a 17% increase compared to 2024. About 75% of this contribution remained within Suriname to support employment, government revenue, and local businesses.

The economic impact was comprised of several key components: US$ 345 million in payments to suppliers and contractors, US$ 84 million via net profit sharing with Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N. V., US$ 79 million in income and wage taxes, US$ 78 million in employee salaries, and US$ 48 million in royalties. The mine's supply chain included 308 Surinamese suppliers and contractors, and the operation directly employed approximately 1,277 people.

The Merian mine's operational lifespan is currently projected to last until at least 2040, with Newmont exploring additional growth opportunities to extend these benefits. The company also noted its commitment to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) with Indigenous and Tribal communities and its strategy to support artisanal and small-scale mining.
