Newmont's Cadia Gold Mine Production Slashed After Earthquakes in Orange, NSW

On June 19, a magnitude‑3.4 underground quake struck Newmont Corporation's Cadia gold mine, about 25 km south of Orange, New South Wales. The tremor, following a larger April 14 quake that was the strongest on record for the region, forced a temporary halt to operations. Newmont CEO Natascha Viljoen said during an earnings call that emergency procedures worked, no injuries occurred, and the company is still assessing the impact.

Attributed gold output from Cadia fell to 34,000 ounces in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, down sharply from 94,000 ounces in the prior quarter and from 104,000 ounces a year earlier. The slowdown contributed to an overall 1 % decline in Newmont's quarterly production, though higher outputs at its Boddington mine partially offset the loss. Net earnings for the half‑year ended June 30 rose to US$5.5 billion, helped by a gold price of US$4,661 per ounce.
