Newmont's Merian mine produces 4 million ounces of gold in ten years

The Merian gold mine has produced approximately 4 million ounces of gold since the start of commercial production in 2016. During a celebration of the mine's tenth anniversary, Newmont Suriname reported that total revenue reached approximately US$ 6.6 billion, with US$ 4.74 billion—an average of 73 percent over the last decade—contributed to Suriname.

President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons attended the event, noting the gold sector's economic importance while emphasizing that other economic sectors must also be allowed to develop. She stressed the necessity of organizing the gold sector to ensure sustainable development and highlighted that local communities must benefit from activities occurring in their vicinity.

Newmont's Managing Director for the Americas, Dave Meador, stated that the company's success is measured not only by gold production but by the value created for Suriname through investments in local businesses, employment, and community projects. Current estimates suggest the mine, which currently operates two pits, could remain operational until 2042.
