Newport Beach police rescue five dogs from hot vehicle

Newport Beach Police officers rescued five dogs from a vehicle on the 2400 block of Holly Lane after finding them trapped in extreme heat. Body-camera footage released by the department shows an officer smashing a car window to reach the animals, which were largely confined in cages and showing visible signs of distress.

A veterinarian determined the dogs' body temperatures had reached potentially deadly levels, though all five animals survived and have since fully recovered. Three of the dogs are currently available for adoption at the Newport Beach Animal Shelter.

The owner of the dogs was issued a misdemeanor citation for multiple animal-welfare violations. The case has been forwarded to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for further review. The incident occurred as Southern California faces a prolonged heat wave with temperatures expected to reach triple digits in many areas.
