Newport Folk and Jazz festivals set bike‑attendance records in 2026

Cyclists set new attendance records at the 2026 Newport Folk and Jazz festivals. Bike Newport reported 5,144 bicycles over the three days of Folk Fest (Friday 1,812; Saturday 1,720; Sunday 1,612) and 1,786 bikes over the three days of Jazz Fest (Friday 609; Saturday 595; Sunday 582). Folk Fest Friday’s count represented more than 18% of festival attendees, the highest cycling share recorded for any U.S. music festival, while Jazz Fest saw a 34% increase over 2025 and a 70% rise over 2024.

In response, the City of Newport installed a temporary two‑way bike lane on Harrison Avenue for Folk Fest, which was later removed for Jazz Fest. Attendees urged the lane’s return after a vehicle‑bike collision caused injuries. Bike Newport’s directors Allyson McCalla and Bari Freeman said they will pursue additional safety measures and route improvements for 2027. The festivals also highlighted a strong community focus, featuring collaborations among rising artists such as Tiny Habits and emphasizing anti‑hate and inclusivity messages throughout the weekend.
