Newport residents protest expansion of hyperscale datacentres
Residents on the western fringes of Newport, South Wales, are expressing significant opposition to the rapid expansion of hyperscale datacentres in their community. Local inhabitants report that massive facilities, such as a 23-metre-high structure, are obstructing views and disrupting residential life.
Concerns raised by locals include the potential for constant noise pollution from air blast cooling systems and harmful fumes from the regular testing of backup diesel generators. Some residents have already reported issues with low-frequency humming from existing facilities on the 46-acre campus, which borders a small enclave of 27 houses.
While local politicians have promoted these developments as vital job creators, residents feel ignored by authorities. The tension highlights a broader conflict in Britain’s datacentre boom, as US tech firms expand infrastructure to provide the computing power required for advanced artificial intelligence models.
