Newquay inquest details death of nine-day-old baby
An inquest has heard details regarding the death of nine-day-old Darcey Maunder, who died in a Newquay hotel room on November 11, 2023. Her parents, Rochelle Thomas and Andrew Maunder, were staying at the Victoria Hotel following the infant's birth.
Police investigations described the hotel room as being in a messy state, containing empty alcohol bottles and white powder on various surfaces, including a baby's dummy. Both parents subsequently tested positive for cocaine and cannabis.
A toxicology report confirmed the presence of cocaine in the infant's system. Experts noted that the cocaine could have been ingested via breastmilk, inhalation, or contact with a contaminated surface. However, forensic and paediatric specialists stated that due to a lack of research on the impact of cocaine on infants, it could not be definitively determined if the substance caused her death.
