NewTec and E-T-A develop space-saving power distribution for trains
NewTec and E-T-A have developed a modular platform for intelligent electronic power distribution in rail vehicles. The concept utilizes Solid State Power Control (SSPC) technology, combining semiconductor-based protection, intelligent software, and modern communication architecture.
This system aims to optimize space within rolling stock by reducing the footprint of traditional control cabinets by up to 90 percent. This space saving can be used to increase passenger capacity, such as adding an extra seat per vehicle, which may improve profitability and passenger comfort.
The platform also provides real-time access to system states and loads, offering increased transparency for train drivers. Additionally, the technology supports early error detection and condition-based maintenance to enhance vehicle availability. According to NewTec Managing Director Matthias Wolbert, the platform ensures future-proofing through seamless integration into train networks via TRDP.
