Newton Melo Bastos, creator of Caldinho de Capela, dies at 82

Newton Melo Bastos, known as Seu Newton, has died at the age of 82 in Capela, Alagoas. He was the creator of the traditional Caldinho de Capela, a culinary staple that has become a gastronomic reference and is recognized as the Cultural and Immaterial Heritage of Alagoas.

Bastos began preparing bean and mocotó broths nearly 50 years ago. He later developed a chicken broth recipe that became a major success, attracting tourists to the municipality of Capela. The local government issued a statement mourning the loss of the entrepreneur, noting that he left a lasting mark on the culture and history of the region.
