Nexø urban renewal projects underway in Denmark

Urban renewal projects in Nexø, Bornholm, have entered a new phase with construction plans set to be completed by summer 2027. Two major tenders have been awarded: PLE A/S will construct a bridge to connect the harbor with the pier, designed for accessibility for wheelchair users and those with mobility impairments, while Jens Møller Gudhjem A/S will renovate the town square area.

The square renovation will include new granite paving, increased greenery, and permanent street furniture. However, a planned sauna project at the harbor has been excluded from the current scope due to budget constraints, as initial bids significantly exceeded available funds.

Parallel to these infrastructure works, debate continues regarding the development of Nordmolen. Local residents and stakeholders are advocating for a modern, industrial architectural style that reflects Nexø’s identity as a commercial harbor town, rather than traditional coastal aesthetics. Concerns have been raised regarding the scale of proposed residential and hotel buildings by Gefion Group, with locals emphasizing the need for designs that provide wind protection and respect the town's unique character.
