NexGen Energy begins construction on major Canadian uranium mine

NexGen Energy has commenced construction on the Rook I uranium mining project in Saskatchewan, Canada. The project, which is expected to become one of the world's largest uranium mines, aims for an eventual annual production of approximately 30 million pounds of uranium concentrate.

NexGen CEO Leigh Curyer confirmed that the company is in regular technical dialogue with mining giant BHP regarding the project. While no formal equity partnership has been announced, NexGen is seeking to raise $1 billion in capital over the next nine months through various methods, including debt finance, direct equity, and prepayment agreements with utility companies.

The Rook I site holds estimated uranium resources of at least 226 million pounds. The development comes amid rising global demand for nuclear energy to support power-intensive sectors like AI data centers and to diversify energy supplies.
