Nextcloud and Libre Workspace enable self‑hosted office solutions

Nextcloud is an open‑source platform that lets users run a private cloud on their own hardware, offering file sync, calendar, contacts, photo management and an Office suite via Collabora Online. The official installation uses Docker and runs comfortably on 4 GB RAM for personal use, with 6–8 GB needed for full Office, Talk and antivirus services, a dual‑core CPU and an SSD for acceptable performance. Libre Workspace builds on Nextcloud, bundling it with Collabora or OnlyOffice for document editing, Jitsi for video calls, Matrix/Element for messaging, and a Samba‑based Active Directory for user management. It runs on Debian Linux behind the Caddy web server, stores encrypted backups with Borg, and targets small businesses and families, typically supporting up to a few dozen employees. Both projects aim to replace commercial services such as Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 while keeping data under the owner’s control.
