NextEra Energy proposes $66.8 billion acquisition of Dominion Energy

NextEra Energy is pursuing a $66.8 billion acquisition of Dominion Energy, a move that would create one of the world’s largest regulated utility monopolies. The deal is driven in part by the surging electricity demand from new technologies, specifically artificial intelligence and data centers, which is expected to contribute to a projected 60% increase in U.S. electricity demand between 2025 and 2045.

The proposed merger faces scrutiny regarding its impact on consumers. In Virginia, where the State Corporation Commission will oversee the decision, critics argue the deal may prioritize shareholder profits over ratepayer protections. NextEra has offered a package for Virginia customers that includes temporary monthly bill credits for four years, job creation, and clean energy investments. However, some observers note that these benefits are being offered on a state-by-state basis and may not serve as a template for other regions, such as South Carolina.

Public awareness of the merger remains low; a recent poll indicated that 60% of Virginia voters have heard nothing at all about the proposed acquisition. Voters expressed various conditions for approval, including guarantees that customer rates will not rise and requirements that data centers bear the full cost of their energy service.
