NextEra Energy faces scrutiny over political history in Dominion merger case

The Virginia State Corporation Commission is reviewing a proposed $67 billion merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy. During recent hearings, advocacy group Clean Virginia urged regulators to scrutinize NextEra’s history of political dealings and past attempts to acquire utilities in states like Hawaii and Texas.

A central point of contention is the “Robo Memorandum,” a document that may be required to be turned over during the discovery process. The memo reportedly contains evidence regarding NextEra’s alleged involvement in illicit schemes in Florida, including funding “ghost candidates” to influence elections, offering employment to officials to secure utility takeovers, and dictating media coverage to target political critics.

NextEra previously agreed to a $150 million settlement in June to resolve disputes concerning its involvement in political interference schemes in Florida. Critics argue that the company’s past legal actions and political lobbying are highly relevant to whether the proposed merger serves the public interest.
