NFL announces new suspension policy for dangerous player infractions

The NFL and the NFLPA have announced a new disciplinary system aimed at improving player safety by targeting specific high-risk infractions. Under the new policy, players who accumulate three violations within a season across five designated categories will face an automatic one-game suspension.

The five targeted infractions are hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks. The league intends to distinguish between isolated mistakes and repeat offenders who consistently use dangerous techniques.

Key components of the overhaul include:

• Financial Incentives: Players who commit only one of the five designated violations in a season will have 50% of their fine returned. For violations outside these five categories, 100% of the fine may be returned. • Accountability: Coaches will be required to attend meetings with the league if a player approaches the suspension threshold. Teams with excessive violations will face increased financial penalties. • Continuity: While all players will start the 2026 season with a clean slate, violations can carry over into subsequent seasons.

Former coach Ron Rivera has been added to the group of former players responsible for overseeing on-field discipline appeal hearings.
