NFL announces restrictions for players returning to college

The NFL has clarified its policy regarding players who leave the professional league to return to collegiate competition. NFL executive Troy Vincent stated that any player who returns to college this season will be prohibited from signing with an NFL team for the remainder of the current year. Such players will instead be considered free agents for the 2027 season.

This announcement follows recent decisions by major collegiate conferences, including the SEC and Big Ten, to prohibit players previously registered on NFL rosters from competing at the university level. Other conferences, such as the ACC and Big 12, are also discussing similar restrictions.

The policy shift occurs amid ongoing legal tensions between the NCAA and athletes. Some players, such as Dequan Wright and Zavian Harris, have sought to return to college to utilize expanded eligibility rules, but they face challenges because they entered college before recent rule changes. These athletes are currently part of litigation against the NCAA, arguing that existing regulations deprive them of educational and financial opportunities.
