NFL backup quarterbacks drive Week 3 wins and mid-season trades

The importance of backup quarterbacks has become increasingly evident during the 2026 NFL season. In Week 3, several backup performances were critical to team success, including Case Keenum’s performance for the Chicago Bears and Marcus Mariota’s three touchdown passes for the Washington Commanders.

In a mid-season move, the New York Giants acquired quarterback J. J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick. The trade follows an injury to Jaxon Dart and aims to bolster the Giants' depth behind veteran Jameis Winston. While Winston remains the primary option, the acquisition of McCarthy provides the team with more long-term flexibility and a legitimate backup option beyond practice squad players.
