NFL expands content strategy to target female audiences
The NFL is intentionally scaling up content focused on players and their significant others as part of a strategic campaign to attract women and younger fans. This initiative follows the ‘Taylor Swift effect,’ where increased visibility of high-profile relationships has been shown to improve favorable outlooks among Gen Z and Millennial women.
Reports indicate that recent viral videos of players at training camp with their partners—such as Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert with fiancée Madison Beer—are part of a coordinated effort to highlight the personal journeys of players. NFL SVP of social and influencer marketing Ian Trombetta stated that the league seeks ‘authentic opportunities to highlight our players and the people who are part of their journey,’ noting that such content has resonated strongly with key growth audiences.
This shift in content strategy aims to leverage the relatability of players' personal lives to expand the league's reach, with plans to continue increasing female-focused content in the future.
