NFL expands international presence with global regular season games

The NFL is aggressively expanding its international presence by hosting regular season games outside the United States. This season, nine games are scheduled across seven countries and four continents. The league's strategy involves creating ‘mini Super Bowls’ by immersing in local cultures and offering week-long fan engagement activities to maximize synergy with host locations.

New host cities and countries include Australia, France, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In Spain, the league has established an NFL Spain office to support an estimated 11 million fans, following a successful inaugural game in Madrid at the Bernabéu. The league also utilizes its Global Markets Program, with all 32 teams participating to promote the brand abroad.

Despite the growth in international viewership and game hosting, the viability of establishing permanent overseas franchises remains a subject of debate. While there has been long-standing discussion regarding a permanent team in London, obstacles such as competition with the English Premier League and the historical failure of NFL Europe suggest that demand for international games does not necessarily equate to the feasibility of overseas franchises.
