NFL implements new rules after Patriots video wall trick revealed

An analysis of over a decade of New England Patriots broadcasts has revealed a visual trick used at Gillette Stadium to potentially confuse opposing kickers. Ryan Paganetti, a former analytics employee for several NFL teams, discovered that the stadium's video wall displayed a mirrored perspective of the goalposts during field goal and extra point attempts.

This mirrored image created a second, slightly offset pair of yellow goalposts behind the actual ones. Additionally, the video wall's wind indicators sometimes showed directions opposite to the physical wind bands on the goalposts, creating further visual interference. Paganetti's research, which included a comparison of 52 Patriots kicks, found that this mirrored effect was never shown during the Patriots' own attempts, suggesting it was used exclusively against opponents.

In response to these findings, the NFL has tightened regulations regarding the use of stadium video walls.
