NFL implements new three-strike suspension rule for player safety

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed to a new “three-strike” suspension policy designed to enhance player safety. Under this system, players will receive a one-game suspension if they commit three violations within a single specific category. The five categories subject to this rule are hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks.

While violations will carry over to subsequent seasons, all players will begin the 2026 regular season with a clean slate. Consequently, players fined during the 2026 preseason for these infractions will not start the regular season with prior strikes on their record.

The league is also introducing a fine reimbursement policy. Players who commit only one violation in the five specified safety categories can receive 50 percent of their fine back at the end of the season, while single offenses for most other on-field rules may qualify for a 100 percent refund.

Additionally, the NFL has approved rule changes regarding kickoffs. Teams are no longer required to be trailing to attempt an onside kick, provided they declare their intention to do so. New regulations also aim to eliminate the incentive for kicking teams to intentionally kick the ball out of bounds when kicking off from the 50-yard line.
