NFL mandates uniform video board displays during kicking attempts
The NFL has issued a rule change mandating that stadium video and ribbon boards must display the same All-22 camera angle or static image for both the home and visiting teams during field goal and extra-point attempts. This move aims to ensure competitive equity and prevent visual distortions.
The regulation follows a viral social media discovery by former NFL analytics coach Ryan Paganetti, who revealed that the New England Patriots had used a reverse All-22 view on their video boards at Gillette Stadium. This tactic created an optical illusion by placing a second, offset set of goalposts on the screen behind the actual uprights. Additionally, the reverse angle could cause wind streamers on the display to point in the opposite direction of the actual wind, potentially disorienting opposing kickers.
While the Patriots were not violating any existing rules at the time, the league has now clarified that any discrepancies in what is shown to each kicking team will result in accountability measures and discipline. The change ensures that regardless of which team is kicking, the visual information provided on stadium screens remains consistent.
