NFL introduces rookie debut patches and clarifies college return eligibility

The NFL is introducing new rookie patches that may signal a move toward jersey advertising. Topps, owned by Fanatics, announced that rookies will wear a “debut” patch during their first regular-season games. These patches will be embedded into one-of-one autographed trading cards, creating a new revenue stream through collectible merchandise.

Separately, the NFL has clarified eligibility rules for players returning to college football. According to a league source, rookies who sign professional contracts but are subsequently cut and return to college will not be eligible for the next NFL Draft. Instead, they would be treated as free agents. This decision comes amid ongoing legal and regulatory shifts regarding player eligibility in college sports, including recent rule changes by the NCAA and specific conference bans in the Big Ten and SEC.
