NFL players face high CTE risks in new brain study
A recent study published in the British Medical Journal has highlighted the high prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among former NFL players. Researchers at Mass General Brigham examined 235 donated brains from players who died between 2016 and 2021, finding that 215 showed evidence of the disease. The study suggests the prevalence rate could range from a minimum of 24.5% to a maximum of 97.7%.
The research emphasizes that neurological damage often results from repetitive subconcussive blows rather than single major impacts. Data indicates that the probability of contracting CTE doubles for every 2.6 years played. These cumulative hits can lead to long-term issues including depression, apathy, and impaired cognitive functions.
While players like former 49ers running back Roger Craig have spoken publicly about battles with dementia, current players remain divided. Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton expressed a willingness to risk his long-term health to provide for his family but noted he would prefer his future children not play football past high school. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the potential expansion of the NFL regular season to 18 or 20 games, which may increase player exposure to injury.
