NFL players push for natural grass fields

After the FIFA World Cup temporarily installed natural grass at several NFL venues, most notably MetLife Stadium for the Argentina‑Spain final, players have intensified calls for permanent grass surfaces. The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) is evaluating whether to prioritize turf upgrades in upcoming collective‑bargaining talks, with the current labor agreement set to expire in March 2031.

Prominent players such as 49ers tight end George Kittle, quarterback Caleb Williams and running back Breece Hall have voiced support on social media, quoting Kittle’s tweet: “Grass looks great at MetLife! Can we keep it that way @NFL??”. Owners, however, face the added cost of installing and maintaining grass, and may seek concessions elsewhere in the agreement. No final decision has been reached, and the discussion remains an informal negotiating point for the next CBA.
