NFL teams finalize starting quarterbacks ahead of season opener

As the 2026 NFL season approaches, several teams have finalized their starting quarterback decisions, with a trend favoring veteran experience. The Minnesota Vikings have named Kyler Murray as their starter over J. J. McCarthy. Murray joined the Vikings following his release from the Arizona Cardinals during training camp.

In Cleveland, the Browns have confirmed Deshaun Watson as the starter ahead of Shedeur Sanders. Other notable roster moves include the Baltimore Ravens selecting Jovaughn Gwyn as their starting center over veteran Ethan Pocic, and the Atlanta Falcons opting for Tua Tagovailoa based on camp preparation.

Following the decision in Minnesota, Vikings General Manager Nolan Teasley addressed J. J. McCarthy’s role, stating that the quarterback is expected to continue developing and supporting his teammates. Teasley noted that McCarthy has been practicing in full and remains healthy despite recent injury concerns.
