NFL to eliminate Pro Bowl game in favor of player honors
The NFL has announced it will eliminate the Pro Bowl game, ending a tradition that has existed in various forms since 1951. Starting with the 2026 season, the league will move away from competitive all-star matches, including both tackle and flag football formats.
Instead of an on-field competition, the league will focus on individual recognition. Approximately 88 players will still be named Pro Bowlers and honored for their performance. These players will be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles during the weekend traditionally reserved for the event.
The decision follows feedback from players who expressed a desire to avoid competitive play following the intense physical toll of the regular season and playoffs. NFL executives stated the shift aims to return the Pro Bowl to its original purpose: honoring the ‘best of the best’ without the distractions of a game that had seen declining popularity and interest.
