Ángel Aguirre Rivero linked to process for Ayotzinapa disappearance case
A federal judge in Mexico has linked former Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero to criminal proceedings for the crime of forced disappearance. The ruling follows a 15-hour hearing at the Altiplano federal judicial center regarding the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Normal School in Ayotzinapa.
The prosecution, led by the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), alleges that Aguirre Rivero ordered the concealment and destruction of evidence related to the events in Iguala. Specifically, the indictment claims he directed the elimination of video recordings from the Palace of Justice that could have provided information on the students' whereabouts or the involvement of state agents.
While the defense presented 31 pieces of evidence to contest the accusations, the judge ruled they were insufficient to discredit the prosecution's hypothesis. The court has granted a 120-day period to conclude the complementary investigation. Aguirre Rivero, who is currently held in a maximum-security prison, faces charges related to what is considered a crime against humanity.
