Ángel Aguirre Rivero arrested in connection with Ayotzinapa case

The arrest of former Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero has not altered the demands of the parents of the 43 Ayotzinapa students disappeared in 2014. The families continue to demand the release of over 800 military intelligence documents and the return of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI).

Aguirre Rivero was detained in the State of Mexico by the Attorney General's Office (FGR) on allegations that he ordered the destruction of security camera footage from the Palace of Justice in Iguala. This footage was critical to the investigation into the night the students were intercepted and disappeared. A judge has ordered preventive detention for the former governor.

Legal advisors for the families attended the initial hearing at the Almoloya prison. While they described the arrest as positive, they emphasized that detentions must result in actionable information regarding the whereabouts of the 43 students. The families maintain that investigations must expand beyond state and municipal authorities to include federal officials and the Mexican Army.
