Ángel Alonso, a prominent figure in Catalan theatre, directing, and television, has passed away at the age of 84. Throughout a professional career spanning more than five decades, Alonso was a central figure in the transformation of the contemporary performing arts scene.
As a co-founder and director of Teatre Villarroel from 1972 until the early 2000s, Alonso helped establish the venue as a vital hub for theatrical innovation. During the transition from the Franco dictatorship to democracy, the theatre served as a crucial gateway for independent companies from Catalonia as well as those from cities like Madrid and Seville that faced censorship and repression.
Alonso's prolific career included the premiere of 78 shows, encompassing 22 original texts and 18 adaptations and translations, attracting over 3.5 million spectators. Notable works include 'L'estranya parella,' which saw over two million spectators, and 'Històries de la puta mili.' His leadership at Teatre Villarroel provided a platform for legendary companies such as Els Joglars, Dagoll Dagom, Comediants, and Tricicle.
