Ángel Francisco Parra, legendary Venezuelan jockey, dies at 79

Legendary Venezuelan jockey Ángel Francisco Parra, widely known by the nickname ‘El Diablo’, has passed away in Caracas at the age of 79. According to those close to him, Parra had been battling advanced cancer.

Parra was one of the most successful riders in Venezuelan horse racing history, securing over 2,000 career victories. He holds a record five wins in the prestigious Gran Premio Clásico Simón Bolívar, including a feat of winning the race for three consecutive years.

His career was defined by his tenacity in close finishes, most notably his historic rides on the horse Síndaco. Peers and fellow professionals, including former jockey Miguel Blanco, have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a figure considered one of the most complete riders to ever compete at the La Rinconada racetrack.
