Dominican Republic courts reject dismissal of corruption cases
In the Dominican Republic, legal proceedings continue regarding the ‘Operación Calamar’ corruption investigation. Attorney and politician Ángel Lockward has filed an opposition resource against a court decision that rejected the extinction of criminal action against him. Lockward maintains that his 2024 agreement to return RD$220 million to the Public Ministry was not an admission of guilt, but rather a result of pressure to protect his family from being involved in the case.
Simultaneously, a tribunal has rejected requests for the extinction of criminal action for 13 defendants, including former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez. The court ruled that while the legal timeframe has been exceeded, the delay is considered reasonable due to the high volume of procedural incidents and resources involved in the case. The investigation focuses on alleged corruption and mismanagement of public funds during Rodríguez’s tenure. The court emphasized that the case will proceed for as long as necessary to reach a resolution.
