Ángel Víctor Torres announces 2027 candidacy for Canary Islands presidency
Ángel Víctor Torres, Secretary General of PSOE Canarias, has officially announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands for the 2027 regional elections. During an event in La Laguna, Tenerife, Torres highlighted his previous administration during the ‘Pacto de las Flores’ as a period of stability despite the pandemic and the La Palma volcanic eruption.
Torres criticized the current regional government, led by Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular, regarding issues such as housing access, public universities, healthcare, and early childhood education. He argued that current policies have failed to address social inequality and housing shortages.
In a strategic shift, Torres indicated that while the PSOE aims to build a progressive majority, he is open to negotiating with Coalición Canaria if necessary. He stated that the socialists would engage with parties that “distance themselves from the far-right and ultra-right,” implying that a future pact with Coalición Canaria is possible provided they break their current alliance with the Partido Popular.
