Canary Islands: PSOE primaries launch and student transport disputes
Political activity in the Canary Islands is marked by several developments. The PSOE Canarias has announced the schedule for its primaries to select a candidate for the 2027 regional presidency. Secretary General Ángel Víctor Torres has confirmed his candidacy, stating his goal is to “volver a ganar las elecciones en Canarias”. The process begins with the submission of candidacies on September 17.
Regarding student welfare, the Government of the Canary Islands has submitted a formal proposal to the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium. The initiative seeks to allow Canary Island students studying in Madrid to access subsidized public transport without needing to register as residents in the Community of Madrid. This follows a change in Madrid's requirements that has significantly increased costs for displaced students.
In local governance, the PSOE in Tenerife has requested an extraordinary plenary session to address sanitation and pollution issues at Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz. Additionally, political maneuvering continues in Gran Canaria, where Nueva Canarias leaders have dismissed rumors regarding potential new candidates for the Cabildo and the Mayoralty of Las Palmas.
On a cultural note, the Parliament of the Canary Islands has inaugurated a new sculpture dedicated to La Graciosa, ensuring all eight islands of the archipelago are represented in the institution's entrance.
