Mexico boosts tourism investment and digital community initiatives
Mexico is strengthening its tourism sector through digital transformation and increased foreign investment. Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora announced that tourism-related foreign direct investment (IEDT) grew by 49 percent in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 589 million dollars. In the first half of 2026, total IEDT in the sector reached 1.304 billion dollars.
To support local growth, the Mexican government is collaborating with ONU Turismo to promote community-based tourism. A key initiative involves developing a digital marketing platform designed to allow small businesses and local communities to offer their services directly to travelers. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on intermediaries and ensure a higher proportion of tourism revenue remains within local communities. The cooperation also includes technical training, language courses, and digital tool workshops for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Additionally, the 'Ángeles Verdes' service reported significant activity during the summer vacation period from June 29 to August 30. The program provided approximately 43,000 services to over 125,000 tourists, with 64.9 percent of requests being for mechanical assistance and 31.2 percent for tourism information.
