Nghe An province promotes brocade weaving through community tourism

In western Nghe An province, traditional brocade weaving of the Thai ethnic group is being utilized to bolster community-based tourism. Artisans in villages such as Xieng, located in the Mon Son commune, are diversifying their product lines to include scarves, fabric bags, small purses, and notebook covers, blending traditional patterns with modern consumer demands.

The weaving process utilizes natural materials including cotton, flax, hemp, and silk, with dyes extracted from leaves, tree bark, and roots. Beyond manufacturing textiles, the initiative allows visitors to engage with the culture by learning about weaving processes, exploring pattern meanings, and attempting to use traditional looms. This craft has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, helping to preserve Thai cultural identity while creating economic opportunities through tourism.
