NGII and KOPRI partner to monitor polar regions via satellite
The National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) to enhance polar research through advanced spatial information. The partnership aims to improve the efficiency of national policies regarding polar mapping, surveying, and the establishment of place names.
Under the agreement, the NGII will utilize its CAS500 satellites (LandSat 1 and 2) to conduct periodic observations of key Antarctic research areas and Arctic shipping routes. This monitoring will focus on changes in terrain, ecology, and glaciers. Additionally, the two organizations will collaborate on constructing geodetic observation facilities at polar research stations and sharing research outcomes.
The collaboration seeks to strengthen South Korea's presence in polar regions by discovering and naming new locations in the Antarctic using Korean terminology, thereby enhancing the nation's scientific standing and research stability.
