Nglanggeran Tourism Village proposed as Indonesian national model

Nglanggeran Tourism Village in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, has been proposed as a national model for community-based tourism development in Indonesia. Following its 2021 Best Tourism Village Award from UN Tourism, members of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) suggested that the village's success serve as a ‘best practice’ for other rural areas.

Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo, Vice Chair of Commission VII, noted that the village's success stems from the local community's ability to identify, manage, and package local potential into tourism products that attract both domestic and international visitors. The village's strength lies in its governance, local product development, and the integration of tourism with the local economy.

Mursidi, Chairman of the Nglanggeran Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis), emphasized that while the village has achieved independent status, the focus remains on sustainability. He expressed hope that the economic, social, and environmental benefits of their tourism activities would extend to surrounding buffer villages.
