Ngorongoro Conservation Area: Ten lions found dead in suspected poisoning

Ten lions were found dead in the Ndutu area of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area on September 18, 2026. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) stated that preliminary findings suggest the animals died after ingesting poison. An expert investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of death and identify those responsible.

The incident occurs amid long-standing tensions between Tanzanian authorities and the local Maasai community. Since 2022, the government has implemented an eviction program, arguing that population growth is encroaching on wildlife habitats. Human rights organizations have criticized these actions, citing instances of excessive force and arbitrary detentions.

This event follows similar wildlife tragedies in East Africa. In Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem, at least 18 elephants died earlier this year from suspected poisoning, leading to several arrests. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a critical habitat for many threatened species.
