Ngouri and Barou communities sign peace agreement in Chad
The Ngouri canton and the Barou community of Ngouri-Malchouri have officially signed a reconciliation agreement, ending 33 years of tension and disputes in Chad’s Lac Province. The agreement, finalized on August 30, 2026, follows several days of mediation led by General Saleh Haggar Tidjani, the Government Delegate to the Lac Province.
Under the terms of the definitive agreement, the Ngouri canton chief officially recognizes the existence of the Barou community and its representatives. In exchange, the Barou community recognizes the customary and administrative authority of the Ngouri canton chief.
During the proceedings, Sa Majestie Boukar Mbodou Choukou, the Canton Chief of Ngouri, and Kadjallah Abdoulaye Abdrahmane Mbodou, leader of the Barou community, both committed to upholding the peace. General Tidjani emphasized that the accord must serve as a foundation for long-term stability, dialogue, and social cohesion to allow the region to focus on economic and social development.
