Nógrád police warn of counterfeit 20,000 forint banknotes

Police have issued a warning following the appearance of counterfeit 20,000 forint banknotes in several shops within Nógrád County. The fraudulent notes differ from genuine currency in size and paper quality, and notably feature a visible ‘COPY’ inscription.

Authorities advise cashiers and customers to inspect security elements such as watermarks, holograms, color-shifting ink, and tactile surfaces. Criminal activity may also be indicated by customers acting unusually impatient or rushed.

If counterfeit money is suspected, it should not be accepted. If already received, the police must be notified. Suspect notes should be handed over to a bank, the post office, or the Magyar Nemzeti Bank for expert examination. Passing on banknotes known or suspected to be counterfeit is a criminal offense.
