Ngāti Rangi and NZ Conservation Celebrate Young Kiwi Sighting in Ohakune
A juvenile kiwi, estimated to be seven to nine months old, was observed running across Lakes Reserve near Ohakune, marking the first confirmed sighting of the species at Rangataua. The Department of Conservation (DOC) and the iwi Ngāti Rangi hailed the event as a milestone in the Karioi Rāhui Ecological Restoration Project, which began in 1995 to re‑establish kiwi populations on their ancestral lands.
DOC Principal Ranger Serena Taylor said, “These records are thrilling but also strike a note of caution. Kiwi have very fragile bodies… a gentle nudge from a curious dog can crush their ribs and internal organs.” Ngāti Rangi Pou Ārahi Helen Leahy added, “What we are seeing now is the outcome of efforts taken by Ngāti Rangi since 1995.” The iwi has received approval to release 40 kiwi over a 14‑month period and is training members as certified kiwi handlers, while kiwi‑avoidance training for dog owners is offered free of charge in the Ruapehu district.
