Vietnam ex-Vice Minister faces 12-13 years in prison for bribery
The Procuracy has proposed various prison sentences for 28 defendants in a major bribery and accounting violation case involving the Department of Overseas Labour Management.
Nguyen Ba Hoan, the former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, faces a proposed sentence of 12 to 13 years in prison for receiving 16.3 billion VND in bribes from businesses seeking to send workers abroad. Defense lawyers argued that Hoan received the bribes passively and did not actively create difficulties for the companies.
Other high-profile recommendations include 15 to 16 years for former Director Tong Hai Nam, who allegedly received approximately 8 billion VND. Nguyen Lam Son, Director of Thanh Do Law Firm, has been proposed a sentence of 5 to 6 years for mediating bribery.
The Procuracy has also requested the confiscation of over 30 billion VND in bribe money and nearly 6 billion VND in mediation fees to be returned to the state budget.
