Nguyen Hoang Phuong's 1,000‑km medical evacuation saves his life

Nguyen Hoang Phuong, a 40‑year‑old Vietnamese teacher and interpreter working in Laos, suffered a sudden, severe headache and vomiting on a night in December 2025. Scans revealed a large hemorrhage in the posterior fossa of his brain, compressing the brainstem and causing rapid loss of consciousness. His wife, Van Anh, rushed him to two private hospitals in Laos, where his condition worsened into a deep coma.

Facing the risk of death during transport, Van Anh arranged an emergency cross‑border transfer. Over more than 1,000 km and through five hospitals, the patient was moved from Laos to Nghệ An province in Vietnam, then flown to the Stroke Center at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi. Doctors performed urgent ventricular drainage to relieve intracranial pressure, stabilising him. Six months later, Phuong returned to lecturing and even drove his wife to deliver their third child.

The case highlights the critical role of rapid medical evacuation and specialized stroke care in saving lives from life‑threatening brain hemorrhages.
