Nguyễn Nghiêu Tư: The 15th-century scholar and diplomat

Nguyễn Nghiêu Tư, a prominent Vietnamese scholar who achieved the rank of 'Trạng nguyên' (First Laureate) in 1448, is remembered for his intellect and quick wit. Born in Bắc Ninh, he overcame a difficult childhood marked by orphanhood and working as a laborer to pursue his education, often practicing writing on leaves and soil.

Known by the nickname 'Trạng Lợn', the title stems from his father's profession as a butcher and his birth during the lunar month of the Pig. During his career under the Later Lê Dynasty, he held several significant positions, including Hàn lâm trực học sĩ and Chưởng lục bộ Thượng thư.

He gained international recognition during his time as an envoy to China, where his ability to handle unexpected situations impressed the Ming Emperor, specifically through a notable ritual performed to pray for rain.
